Social Problems (Soc 220) has gotten off to a great start thus far. The students represent all walks of life and experiences and I look forward to learning just as much from them as they will from me.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” (Dr. Seuss, The Lorax)
Over the past three weeks, we have been discussing a lot, especially on the Discussion Board, about different social issues. We have discussed how crime affects our society, how racial stereotyping affects our society, and the role of healthcare in our country and whether or not it is an issue.
We learned that crime can affects all different races, ages, and professions, and can extend from the government down to the average Joe, and can hurt everyone in between.
We wondered whether or not even having an African-American president would help with racial tensions that, most of us agreed, have not improved as much as Martin Luther King, Jr. might have hoped in the past 40 years. We even talked about how racial tensions might need to be redefined since the days of the Civil Rights Movement, because we have different concerns about race now.
We considered, as well, how we might be able to learn from different countries and bring the best of everything into our healthcare system to help cut down on costs. We watched a video in class on Monday that showed us different healthcare systems around the world, the pros and cons of their systems, and how they compared to our system here in the U.S. Hopefully we can spread awareness of the issue and help to make a healthier, more economically sound, country for our children and ourselves.
I am excited about getting into our groups to work on our Public Service Announcement videos. I really enjoyed the informative presentation Mr. Ken Jones gave to our class about using Windows Movie Maker to edit our videos. I feel that this project will help us do more than just talk about social problems amongst ourselves. Hopefully many people will see our ideas, concerns, and plans in an enjoyable format to help start a positive change in our college, community, nation, and world.
I am enjoying the small class size and the discussion very much from the honor class. This is why I sign up for the class so there would be more involvement between classmates and teacher. We also put down our masks and discuss over some hot to touch issues and we are heading the right direction on all cylinders. I think this is a great chance to learn in such a diverse class and able to look at different point from different people in different perspective.
I keep hearing bits and pieces of my students conversations regarding their group project and I love what I am hearing. Many of them are geniunely excited about their work and look forward to completing the assignment. As an instructor it is rewarding to know that something your students are doing is meaningful and exciting.
I have really been enjoying myself in Sociology!! This is actually my first honors class and I think it’s a pretty cool class. I can agree that the small class size is wonderful!! The discussions that we have in class are “out of this world!” and Im looking forward to taking more honor classes in the future. Good Job on the class thus far Mr. Jenkins…you have really made it interesting!! BRAVO!!!
We have definitely been having some hot discussions in class! We’ve been talking about poverty, family, marriage and what it means! It’s gotten pretty intense! It’s so much fun, though. Because we’re such a small class, and everyone’s so smart, we can have really intense discussions. I think everyone looks forward to classtime and the discussion board, because it gives us an opportunity to voice our opinions and have others poke holes in our argument, which will in the end make it stronger.
One thing I have enjoyed about this class is that we get to lead our own discussions inn blackboard and even in class. Its been interesting to hear everyones point of view and positions on different topics. I haven’t added a whole lot to the discussions in class because listening is so much more fun to me. Mr. Jenkins has been a great teacher, he tells his views, but without pressing his beliefs upon you. I have enjoyed this class and am looking forward to our youtube videos,
